Week of 3/8/04
1. At the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Microsoft
Chairman Bill Gates gave suggestions for ways to stop
the amount of unwanted emails we get on our computers.
His suggestion involved a payment of time rather than
money. What would he require companies to do
before they could send out their junk email?
2. The Mars rover Opportunity was unable to grind a hole
in a Martian rock. NASA scientists will do diagnostic
tests to determine what is wrong with the rover. In the
meantime, scientists hope to use the Alpha Particle
X-ray Spirometer. What will the Alpha Particle X-Ray
Spirometer do to the Martian rocks?
3. US Forest Service officials are estimating that over
one third of the trees in the San Bernardino National
Forest are dead. What are the two things that have caused
all these trees to die?

State legislatures have proposed a constitutional amendment
that would allow 16 year olds a half vote and 14 year
olds a quarter vote in California state elections. WHAT
DO YOU THINK? What might be some pros and cons of this
amendment?
