Have students collect articles and advertisements
from the newspaper that support the view the drugs
are a major part of our culture. Have them classify
kinds and types of drugs represented.
2. Have students
clip articles and advertisements for community service
agencies designed to assist with drug addiction and
rehabilitation. Have them report their findings in
an editorial or feature story.
3. Have students collect
and analyze articles and advertisements related to
the topic of tobacco products and their use. Students
should use the information they have collected to
design ads against the use of tobacco products.
4. Have students collect
and analyze articles and advertisements related to
the topic of alcohol and alcoholism. Students should
use the information they have collected to write a
story on the role of alcohol in our society.
5. Race against time
to find the following science-related items in the
paper: the weather map, an ad for "junk"
food, a product that uses petroleum, a health tip,
an ad or article about energy, a job requiring computer
skills and an article about an environmental problem.
6. Have students identify
ads for products that they use in their homes. Have
them analyze the ingredients that make the various
products effective (e.g. hair spray, deodorant, toothpaste,
etc...)
7. Have students collect
information from the paper related to the danger or
potential dangers of cosmetic fads and general personal
care items. Have students identify and consider consumer
protection laws that may apply.
8. Have students find
articles in Thursdays Tech Trends that relate
innovations in technology. Write an essay predicting
a new trend.
9. Have students collect
ads for products that were not available 10,20 or
30 years ago. Have them identify scientific advances
that made this product possible.
10. Have students find
articles, and ads illustrating equipment that will
help conserve energy such as storm windows or home
insulation. Have them research and explain how these
products save energy .
11. Have students look
at the weather map in the newspaper. Study the various
symbols used to show the weather across the country.
