1. Students match upper
and lower case letters found in the newspaper.
2. As groups, students
find pictures of things that begin with certain letters
of the alphabet and then write the letter on a sheet
of paper and paste down the pictures.
3. Have students look
for numerals from 1-20 in the paper. Have them paste
the numerals onto a sheet of paper in numerical order.
4. Have students race
through the newspaper! Give them five minutes. See
how many numbers from 1-25 they can find. Have them
circle each as they find it.
5. Students choose a
picture from the newspaper and write a story about
it. Post on the bulletin board or make a class book.
6. Have students find
numerals for the numbers 1-10 in the paper. Have them
paste each numeral at the top of a piece of paper.
Under each numeral paste that number of objects. Have
them assemble these pages into a number booklet.
7. Have students look
at the front page together and count the number of
columns, number of headlines, number of pictures,
and number of articles.
8. Have students count
how many sections are in the paper. Now have them
count how many pages are in the paper. Which section
has the most pages?
9. Have students find
different geometric shapes in the newspaper, i.e.,
squares, circles, rectangles. Color each shape a different
color.
10. Have students look
through the newspaper for pictures of the different
kinds of snacks listed below. Paste each picture next
to the category in which it belongs.
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Grains
- Proteins
- Dairy
- Grains
- Something new youd like to try
11. Have Students write
a cut and paste poem or story using words clipped
from the headlines of the newspaper
