Cal-Sate men decisive over CS Stanislaus

Cal State-San Bernardino, especially Bobby Burries in his return

to the court, left nothing to chance.

In doing so, the Coyotes gave Cal State-Stanislaus absolutely no chance of

winning.

Burries, who missed San Bernardino's last game due to an ankle sprain, came

alive with 20 points, and the Coyotes' stifling defense forced Stanislaus

into 29 percent field goal shooting, en route to a decisive 81-51 win before

a capacity crowd on Homecoming night Friday in Turlock.

"Bobby stepped up in a big way for us," said San Bernardino coach Larry

Reynolds. "Our guys come in very experienced, and they're a very young team.

This is the first game that we've shot the ball very well. We have

confidence in our outside shooting."

Indeed, San Bernardino (5-0 overall, 1-0 California Collegiate Athletic

Association) put on a shooting clinic for Stanislaus (3-2, 0-1 CCAA) in the

first half. The Coyotes shot 60 percent in the first half, turning an early

7-2 deficit into a 21-13 lead on a three-pointer from Mike Edwards with

10:28 to go in the first half. During that turnaround, Burries had seven of

his 20 points.

Minutes later, the Coyotes unleashed a 12-0 run over a six-minute span to go

up 33-15, keyed by three consecutive steals at one point. A basket by

Warriors forward Jamal O'Quinn, who had a team-high 18 points, stopped the

bleeding only temporarily at the 3:06 mark in the first half, and San

Bernardino went into halftime holding a 44-24 lead.

"We put a lot of distance between the two during that stretch," added

Reynolds. "They weren't able to put it together. We had an excellent first

20 minutes."

Burries turned up the heat just when it appeared Stanislaus was poised to

mount a comeback. After the Warriors trimmed the halftime lead to 44-29 by

scoring the first five points of the second half, Burries scored eight

points in a three-minute span before exiting with 15 minutes left. His play,

coupled with 14 points from Glenn Summerall, put San Bernardino ahead 66-32

at one point, and the Warriors never got closer than 26 points in the second

half.

"We came out strong," said Burries, a preseason All-American. "Stanislaus

kind of just stopped, and we kept going. They beat us last year, so it was

good to put this one under my belt. We needed something like this to go into

our game against Bakersfield tomorrow."

Outmanned and outgunned, the Warriors shot just 23 percent from the floor in

the second half, while getting outrebounded 43-33 against a taller, more

physical squad.

"I think this is the worst I've seen us play," said Stanislaus coach Mike

Terpstra. "San Bernardino is a very good veteran team. It's obvious that

they're ranked 6th in the nation. We're a long way from being near the top

in the conference. They just kicked our butt in every way tonight."
