Given a shot to be alone in the spotlight, San Bernardino Cajon's Donovan Morris put on a show.
Morris compiled 39 points, 11 rebounds and six assists Friday to lead a furious second-half comeback that resulted in a 80-64 victory over Moreno Valley Canyon Springs in the Cowboys' season opener.
Canyon Springs was without junior Richard Cobbs, who has a strained groin.
Morris has only practiced full-time with Cajon for about three weeks in coming off his first year of football.
"I was sorry in that, so I came back to my roots," Morris said. "I promised myself I wouldn't worry about what I did tonight. It's all about the team anyway.
"I thought he (Cobbs) was going to be out there. We missed him."
Cobbs was injured last week against Fresno Clovis West in the Clovis West Tournament. Cougars coach Jeff Stovall refused to use that as an excuse.
Said Stovall: "We beat Rocklin, who beat Crenshaw, in that tournament last week without Richard. We just broke down. Our big people didn't come to play at all today. We deserved what we got." The Cougars (4-2) led 34-26 at halftime before Cajon turned up the energy and defense. Morris opened the second-half scoring with a thunderous, right-hand jam. He had 27 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a block in the second half.
Andre Payne had 12 of his 18 points and two steals, and Kris Silvas had four of his five steals in the second half for Cajon.
The Cougars made just 8 of 23 shots, were outrebounded 13-8 and committed 13 of their 21 turnovers in the second half.
"The second half, we said, `Let's get a little more ball pressure, get the hands up on the shots and we got to get every rebound,' " Cajon coach Jerry Tivey said. "For a first game out, I'm happy with the way we played. Without Richard it's a different game, but it still would have been a good game."
Cougars junior Tron Smith and freshman point guard Andre McGee had 19 points apiece, but McGee had only one second-half field goal and turned the ball over three times in the final three minutes.
