Commuters should consider taking alternate freeway routes to avoid road work starting Monday on Highway 91 in Riverside, a Caltrans spokeswoman said.

Crews will begin work on a $20 million project to revamp Highway 91 between Fourteenth and Madison streets, spokeswoman Holly Kress said.

The main portion of the project will include repaving the outside lanes on both sides of the freeway, she said.

"It gets the most wear on any freeway system," Kress said.

Work on the 4-mile stretch of freeway will also include:

· replacing damaged sections of the roadway;

· replacing metal guardrails with a concrete barrier in the median;

· repaving nine freeway ramps;

· installing a closed-circuit television system with fiber optics to help traffic management.

Crews plan to work between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. and may limit traffic to one travel lane during construction.

The work will still overlap with commuting hours, Kress said.

"Seven a.m. is well into the commute time, and at 8 p.m. (commuters) are still coming home," she said.

Commuters traveling to work in Los Angeles and Orange counties should consider taking Highway 60 west to Interstate 15 and then down to Highway 91, Kress said.

Motorists could also use the same route returning home from work, she said.

Caltrans hopes to divert 30 percent of the traffic off Highway 91 and onto alternate routes, Kress said.

"That would really benefit and help the project come along a little quicker," she said.

The project is expected to take two years to complete.
