UCR women win in overtime, 74-71

Stephanie Hughes had 22 points on 6-of-7 shooting as UC Riverside defeated Cal State Fullerton, 74-71 in overtime, in a women's college basketball game at Titan Gym on Monday night.

Amy Houchens added 19 points for the Highlanders (6-15).

Fullerton was led by Tamara Quinn with a game-high 23 points.

The Titans (0-18) outscored UCR in the first half 34-21, but the Highlanders rallied behind a 22-9 run in the final 11 minutes of regulation to tie it 59-59. UCR hit only four shots during that span, yet made 14 of 21 free throws.

The Highlanders had a chance to win in regulation as Starr Knight went to the line with 4.8 seconds left, but she missed both free throws to send the game into overtime.

UCR bested Fullerton 15-12 in the overtime.

The Titans closed to within 65-62 before Houchens hit a three-pointer to give the Highlanders a six-point advantage. Fullerton got as close as 71-68 with 39 seconds remaining, but a layup by Knight and a free throw by Houchens clinched it for UCR.
