Inland area counties reported double-digit gains in taxable sales during first quarter 2000, outpacing several Southern California areas, according to the State Board of Equalization.
First quarter taxable sales in Riverside County totaled $4.0 billion, up 16 percent from the $3.4 billion a year earlier. San Bernardino County posted sales of $4.2 billion, a 13.7 percent gain from $3.7 billion in first quarter 1999.
No Inland area cities reviewed had a taxable sales decline during the first quarter -- the most recent figures available.
Regional economist John Husing said the Inland area started the year 2000 aggressively, thanks to employment gains, population growth, high consumer confidence and rising home values.
